Banks & Brower, we can ensure our clients understand these laws and how they factor into DUI charges.

Can You Buy Alcohol in Indiana on Sundays?

Yes, Indiana does sell alcohol on Sundays, for specific hours — 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. These limits apply to all carryout alcohol purchases. Not only liquor stores but also grocery stores, convenience stores, and other licensed retailers. This window is strictly regulated and maintained to balance between public access and regulatory oversight. To remain by the state’s policies. It is part of an ongoing project. Modernize Indiana’s alcohol laws and keep better control over how they are implemented, and is included in Indiana Code Title 7.1. Carryout sales outside of those hours remain prohibited to meet current legal requirements. The rules can also be directly accessed here in the Indiana General Assembly’s codes, which will allow them to be accessed to clarify the purpose of the former sentence.

What About Beer?

Beer is included as part of the allowed Sunday sales. Which must adhere to the same limited hours of operation outlined in that portion of the law, which are 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Canned and bottled beer can be legally bought for carryout from licensed retailers, such as liquor stores and grocery outlets, during that time frame. Where beer is tasted at bars, restaurants, or breweries, ordinary consumption hours on premises apply.

Previous Rules About Indiana Alcohol Sales on Sundays

Before 2018, Indiana was one of the few remaining holdout states that prohibited Sunday carryout alcohol sales. That shift was made with the recent enactment of Senate Bill 1, which amended the state’s alcohol laws to allow sales on Sundays. Indiana’s new legislation reflected a shift in the state’s approach to regulating alcohol. It sought to balance economic concerns against those of public policy.

Other Indiana Alcohol Sale Laws

The Indiana alcohol laws are much more than just Sunday sales. For instance:

  • Weekday Sales: Monday-Saturday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 A.M. Retailers may cover this broad time frame, with lots of margin between the days of the week to purchase.
  • Licensing Requirements: All vendors need to have proper permits to do so, which could be carried out on-premises or otherwise. The state mandates not just that the applicant meet prescribed standards, which is a must to address lawful minimums. Also that they agree to industry best practices.
  • Holidays: Unless Christmas Day and Election Day, to cite a pair of notable exceptions, put a damper on the beer for those laws, or a genuinely intoxicated person can get in the way.

The laws themselves can be retrieved on Indiana Code Title 7.1 as part of the state’s code that oversees alcohol prohibitions on the whole. The purpose of this law is to ensure that businesses and citizens are aware of their laws and rights regarding the sale of liquor.
